​​      Founded in 2013 in Melbourne, Australia, the music style of YI - Koto and Guitar Duo includes traditional Asian music, Chinese and Japanese folk music, as well as compositions from contemporary composers worldwide.

       Corresponded to the Chinese character "易" (Yì), there are three meanings as the name of the Duo: 1. Uncomplicated; 2. The status of changing; 3. Constancy. The philosophy of the Duo is to provide pure music with uncomplicated mindset, enjoy the ever-changing moment, and pursue the music journey in a consistent way.

Das YI - Koto und Guitar Duo wurde 2013 in Melbourne, Australien von Gitarristin Yunjia Liu und Koto-Spieler Brandon Lee gegründet. Hauptsächlich spielen sie traditionelle asiatische Musik, chinesische und japanische Volksmusik sowie Kompositionen von zeitgenössischen Komponisten weltweit.

Entsprechend dem chinesischen Schriftzeichen "易" (Yì) gibt es drei Bedeutungen als Name des Duos: 1. Unkompliziert; 2. Der Status der Änderung; 3. Beständigkeit. Die Philosophie des Duos ist es, reine Musik mit einer unkomplizierten Denkweise zu versehen, den sich ständig ändernden Moment zu genießen, und die musikalische Reise auf konsequente Weise fortzusetzen.

Brandon Lee is a Japanese koto (zither) performer based in Melbourne, Australia. Originally from Malaysia, he started the koto while attending university in Melbourne. He eventually moved to Japan and was a live-in apprentice for koto virtuoso Kazue Sawai in Tokyo. In 2011, he officially obtained his teaching and performance license from the Sawai Koto School. In 2014, he graduated with a Masters of Music from Monash University.

Since moving back to Melbourne, Brandon has actively performed all around Australia, including Melbourne, Sydney, and Broome. He has performed at events and festivals such as, NGV’s Cool Japan, Broome’s Shinju Matsuri, and more. He has also performed internationally in Japan and America.

Brandon performs both classical and contemporary for the koto but he is also interested in cross-cultural collaboration in music and has worked with musicians like Anne Norman, Peter Knight, Andrea Keeble, and Sandy Evans.

Brandon Lee ist ein Koto-Spieler (japanische Zither) und wohnt in Melbourne, Australien. Der gebürtige Malaysier entdeckte die Koto für sich während seines Studiums in Melbourne. Er zog schließlich nach Japan und wurde ein Live-in-Lehrling der Koto-Virtuosin Kazue Sawai in Tokyo. Im Jahr 2011 erhielt er offiziell seine Lehr- und Aufführungslizenz von der Sawai Koto School. 2014 schloss er sein Studium mit einem Masters of Music an der Monash University ab.

Brandon ist seit seiner Rückkehr nach Melbourne in ganz Australien aktiv aufgetreten, unter anderem in Melbourne, Sydney und Broome. Auch bei internationalen Konzerten, wie in Japan und Amerika war er zu hören und hat auf Veranstaltungen und Festivals wie NGVs Cool Japan, Broomes Shinju Matsuri und vielen mehr musiziert.

Brandon tritt sowohl klassisch als auch zeitgenössisch mit der Koto auf, interessiert sich aber auch für interkulturelle Zusammenarbeit in der Musik und hat mit Musikern wie Anne Norman, Peter Knight, Andrea Keeble und Sandy Evans zusammengearbeitet.

With deep love and strong passion in music, Yunjia Liu (stage name: J. Hermit) enjoys every moment being an independent artist. She was born in China and studied Bachelor of Music (Classical Guitar) at the University of Melbourne with Tonié Field from 2013 to 2016. Yunjia moved to Germany in 2017 and completed studying Master of Music (Guitar Soloist and Composition) at University of Music Detmold. She lives in Finland since July 2020.

Yunjia Liu’s music is deeply influenced by the philosophical ideas such as Minimalism, Taoism, Yin-Yang and the inspirations of Nature. Her multidisciplinary projects focus on theatre, dancing, painting, and poetry. Her music style includes classical music, traditional Asian music, contemporary music, folk music, as well as free improvisatory music and electronic music. She has been giving concerts in Germany, France, Finland, Hungary, England, Australia, and China.

Mit tiefer Liebe und starker Leidenschaft in der Musik genießt Yunjia Liu (Künstlername: J. Hermit) jeden Augenblick, eine Künstlerin zu sein. Sie wurde in China geboren und studierte von 2013 bis 2016 Bachelor of Music (Klassische Gitarre) an der Universität von Melbourne bei Tonié Field. Yunjia zog 2017 nach Deutschland, um Master of Music (Gitarrensolistin und Komposition) an der University of Music Detmold zu studieren. Sie lebt seit Juli 2020 in Finnland.
